Overview

A new layout almost always changes how a space uses power. Workstations move, kitchens and break rooms add dedicated circuits, server closets need clean power and cooling, and new lighting has to meet current energy codes. The first question on any electrical scope is whether the existing service and panels can support the new demand.

Electrical work on our projects is performed by licensed electricians under the general contract and coordinated with the drawings, the ceiling plan, and the other trades. That includes panel and feeder evaluation, branch circuits, devices, LED lighting, occupancy and daylight controls, and emergency and exit lighting.

Local rules shape the scope. Chicago enforces its own electrical code, New York City work is filed and inspected under the NYC Electrical Code, and Florida projects follow the Florida Building Code and the adopted National Electrical Code. Lighting controls are also driven by energy codes, including the New York City Energy Conservation Code and the Chicago Energy Transformation Code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my space need a new electrical panel?

Not always. Many build-outs can reuse the existing panel with new circuits. A new panel or service upgrade is usually needed when the layout adds significant equipment load, such as commercial kitchens, labs, or large IT rooms, or when the existing equipment is outdated.

Do lighting upgrades have to meet energy code?

Yes. When lighting is replaced or reconfigured as part of an alteration, the new work generally has to comply with the energy code in effect, which commonly includes lighting power limits and automatic controls.

Is electrical work inspected separately?

Electrical work is typically inspected at rough-in, before walls and ceilings close, and again at final. We schedule those inspections as part of the project timeline.
